The silence is over. Many of you have been asking when the fifth Charles Holborne book is coming, and at last I have news. I have parted company with Urbane Publications and am delighted to say that Sapere Books will be re-publishing the first four titles over the next few months, with new covers and proper marketing, and the fifth in the series, THE WAXWORK CORPSE, will be out by the autumn. Here’s the press release.

Sapere Books are excited to announce that they have signed the five-book Charles Holborne legal thriller series by acclaimed author, Simon Michael. The series includes four previously published titles, The Brief, The Honest Man, The Lighterman and Corrupted, and the new book in the series, The Waxwork Corpse.

Set in 1960s London, the Charles Holborne thrillers are a noir gangster series featuring the antihero barrister Holborne. Simon writes from personal experience: a barrister for 37 years, he worked in the Old Bailey and other criminal courts defending and prosecuting a wide selection of murderers, armed robbers, con artists and other assorted villainy. The 1960s was the Wild West of British justice, a time when the Krays, Richardsons and other violent gangs fought for control of London’s organised crime. Simon weaves into his thrillers real events of the time and genuine court documents from cases on which he worked. The novels have all garnered strong reviews for their authenticity and excitement.
Simon says about the deal:

“In the short time since they were founded, Sapere Books and their team have demonstrated extraordinary editorial and marketing skill, which is why so many authors are moving to Sapere from more established publishers, and are already seeing astonishing improvements in sales. Amy, Caoimhe and Richard have a real talent for spotting great books and then marketing them very effectively. So, when they offered to re-publish the Charles Holborne thrillers backlist and publish the new ones in the series, I had no hesitation. The first four will be available, starting with The Brief over the summer, and we expect the fifth in the series, The Waxwork Corpse, to be published late autumn. I couldn’t be more excited.”

Amy Durant of Sapere Books, who celebrated a very successful first year in business in March, says:
“I was very excited when Simon came to me and told me he was getting the rights back for the Charles Holborne series. I worked as a freelance editor with Simon on one of the earlier novels and fell in love with his characters and his vivid descriptions of 1960s London. I know his readers are eagerly awaiting the new book, The Waxwork Corpse, and they definitely won’t be disappointed when we release it this autumn!”
